2023 Boat Parade

GENERAL

  • The Fall-Winter newsletter was mailed on December 6, 2023.  The full-color version is available from our news page here.
  • Long Lake is confirmed as an official home to the mudpuppy, a large aquatic salamander that is categorized as a threatened specie in neighboring IL and IA, and on the list of species of special concern in MN. The WDNR is currently performing a study to assess the mudpuppy’s range and abundance in Wisconsin.
  • The Friends of Long Lake apparel and SWAG committee’s future is in question. The committee needs new volunteers to continue both the online and in-person sales into 2024.  For more information, questions, or to volunteer, please reach out through the FLL website here.
LAKE
  • The lake level dropped over a foot from early May to mid-Spetember.  October rains brought the last official reading on October 10, 2023 up to 874.58 feet above mean sea level.   This represents a seasonal drop of 9 inches.  The lake level has now dropped 2.6 ft from the all-time high in July 2020.
  • LLA’s 2023 zebra mussel study determined that the colonization evident in Long Lake is considered average among lakes in the WDNR database.  Sampling will continue for at least two more years to observe zebra mussel changes and spread across the lake.
  •
  • The Waushara County Lake Safety Group met with Recreation Deputy Jacob Hansen on September 30, 2023 for a season wrap-up.  County-wide lake patrolling time exceeded 2.5 times the total of the department’s entire summer season for the prior few years. The number of warnings and citations issued also increased by almost 4 times.  LLA will continue leading the group that includes 11 Waushara County lake organizations interested in improving recreational/boating safety.
  • About 6,500 5 to 7 inch white suckers were planted by LLA with funding support from We Really Kare Fishing Club and Friends of Long Lake.  Suckers are a very important part of the fish population, providing a food source for fish of all sizes. Mature suckers spawn as the water warms up in early May and the minnows are eaten by smaller fish like perch and crappie. As they grow the suckers become a food source for larger game fish.
  • LLA took fall turnover water samples on November 15, 2023.   The samples were sent to UW Stevens Point for lab testing.  Results will be reported when available.
  • In September, Saxeville added an additional 10-ft section of dock to the boat ramp and straightned the guide fences in the water.  That improvement followed the Town’s late-August addition of new fill where lake bottom scour left a large 2-ft dropoff at the end of the concrete.  Thank you Saxeville for the improvements!
  • No new Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) were observed during the 2023 survey of Long Lake by Golden Sands Resource Conservation & Development Council, Inc (RC&D).  The detection survey, performed on July 12, 2023, is a thorough review of the lake’s nearshore area looking for any AIS, both animals and plants, like zebra mussels and Eurasian watermilfoil (EWM). This monitoring protocol is useful to locate pioneer populations of AIS, allowing for a rapid response strategy that may mean the difference between long-term management and potential eradication.
